Surfing.
The main attraction to this lovely town is surfing, and the quality of surfing is truly outstanding. The best surfing is to be found on the beaches just north of San Juan del Sur. There are several outfits in town that provide transfers and even board rentals. They depart several times a day from San Juan del Sur. The most popular beach is Playa Maderas, approximately 15 minutes outside of town.
The road is usually in good shape and can be driven in a regular car. However sometimes, during the rainy season, a 4X4 vehicle is a very good idea. There are several tour operators that provide daily transfers to the beach. It is also possible to hire a cab to take you there. If you are an avid surfer, and really want to be at the beach 24 hours a day, there are several small hostels and lodges that you can check into and just relax and enjoy the beach and be ready for the waves whenever they show up! In addition to Playa Maderas on the north, you will find other less frequented options to the south of town, specifically at Playa el Remanso and Playa Yankee. Canopy Tour
There is one Zip Line Canopy Tour in San Juan del Sur: Da Flying Frog Canopy Tour. The site is just outside of town, on the mountain next to Villas Palermo Hotel. Travel time from downtown to the facility will take less than 15 minutes. They have a total of 16 stations, covering a total distance of over of 2.5 km. This is a great adventure, with great guides. The tour is not only affordable; they actually provide transportation from your hotel to the site and back! One of the highlights of this tour is the frequency with which you will see or hear howler monkeys during your traverse from station to station. Definitely a fun experience!
Horse Back Riding
Any visit to rural Nicaragua without a horse back riding tour is not complete. Better yet when the experience is enhanced when with both a jungle tour and a beach tour in one!
